Shastar Vidiya is an ancient battlefield martial art of India, not to be mistaken as Gatka. It is said to predate Chinese and Japanese martial arts, and may even be an origin for them.

[edit] PreservationIt was preserved by the Nihang Singh sikhs of the Akali Nihang Khalsa army. During the rule of British Empire in India, its practise was banned, and anyone practising it was shot. Due to the ban, the British Empire replaced the art with a sport called gatka.

[edit] Mistaken for gatkaMany people mistake gatka to be the martial art of the sikhs. The art of Shastar Vidiya is now practised and taught by just a small number of people. It has also made its way into the United Kingdom.
